Hurricanes 14, Branford Sting 1

The Hamden Hurricanes 13U continued the winning ways Thursday night crushing the Branford Sting 14-1.  The Canes used 9 hits and spotty Sting pitching which yielded 11 walks.  On the mound Andrew Kirschenbaum earned his first win of the year combining with Andrew Rice, Tamir March and James Michaud for a four hit shut down performance.  At the plate Kyle Brennan and March finished with two hits while Avery Shugrue added an RBI double in the victory.  Ryan McCarthy extended his hit streak to four games with a two run single in the second to get Hamden on the board early.  They would not look back and cruise to victory improving to 21-4-1, 18-3-1 GNHBL.  Hamden heads to the shore this weekend for the War at the Shore Independence Day Tournament.  They take on the CT Pirates Gold (13-9, ESBL Major) at 3:30 on Saturday in the first of their pool play games and then take on the Northeast Longhorns (MA) (3-7, NEAAU) at 9:00 Sunday morning concluding pool play.

Hurricanes 6, Clinton Hounds 5 (10)

It took a few extra innings but the Hamden Hurricanes 13U was able to outlast the Clinton Hounds in route to a 6-5 win in ten innings.  With the win the Canes improve to 20-4-1, 17-3-1 GNHBL.  Hamden jumped on the board early behind a Jeremy Routh (.500) triple and an Avery Shugrue (.354) double.  They carried a 2-0 lead to the sixth inning when the Hounds were able to dent Tyler Rowe's armor and score a lone run.  Hamden responded in the bottom half of the inning with two more runs of their own on back to back to back singles from Kwadir McIntyre (.319), Tyler Rowe (.333) and James Michaud (.348).  Hamden, up 4-1, went to Shugrue to close out the game but he faltered walking four, hitting two, allowing four, all while striking out the side.  The Canes now faced a 5-4 deficit heading to the bottom of the seventh.  A lead off Andrew Rice (.375) single would prove to be huge as he would be able to come across to score on a throwing error by the Hounds' catcher.  Shugrue would work scoreless eighth and ninth innings, while James Michaud (4-1) came on in the tenth shutting down the Hounds and recording the win when Hamden would plate the winning run in the bottom of the tenth.  They did this with help from a leadoff infield single from Trevor Brandi (.306).  Brandi would steal second and despite back to back Hurricane strikeouts, he would score on a towering game winning, walk off double off the bat of Connor Dow (.265).  Shugrue would go 2 for 4 on the day with two doubles and Tyler Rowe would go 2 for 3.  Hamden returns to action Monday night at the Sportsplex at 7 p.m. against the Shoreline Hammerheads.

Hurricanes 7, Clinton Hounds 4

Under the lights Thursday night in Clinton, the Hamden Hurricanes 13U returned to league action four days after falling in the championship of the TCS Father's Day Classic.  With some solid pitching and the aid of four Canes tallying two hits apiece they were able to top the Clinton Hounds (10-7) 7-4.  James Michaud worked four innings and cruised through the first three.  Tamir March came on to work the final three innings and struck out three in the process.  Hamden got on the board early when Trevor Brandi took one for the team getting hit with the bases loaded plating Andrew Kirschenbaum who reached base on the first of his two singles in the second.  After the heart of the order was shutdown in the third, Hamden was able to score another in the top of the fourth.  Hamden's 2-0 lead would disappear when the Hounds were able to plate three in the bottom half of the frame on a single and a two run throwing error.  Shortstop/third baseman would single handedly tie the game for Hamden in the fifth when he would reach on a single, steal second, take third on a pitch in the dirt and score on an overthrow.  Hamden would take the lead for good in the sixth when left fielder Ryan McCarthy would lace a single down the third baseline plating Kyle Brennan and Andrew Rice, both of whom reached base on singles of their own.  Two more insurance runs came in the seventh with James Michaud leading off with a double, Avery Shugrue singling him home and Andrew Rice joining the party with an RBI plating Shugrue.  The Hounds added a run in the seventh but were unable to climb all the way back allowing Hamden to walk away with a 7-4 victory.  On the day Routh, Kirschenbaum, Rice and McCarthy all tallied two hits while Michaud added a double to his credit.  Hamden returns to action Sunday against the Wolcott Storm.  Time and location to be announced.

Hurricanes Lose in TCS Father's Day Championship

The Hamden Hurricanes 13U coasted through the first three games of the 2012 Triple Crown Sports Father's Day Classic beating opponents by a combined 30-7 score but ran into some solid pitching and a case of the pop ups in the championship against the Warriors Baseball Club out of Old Greenwich, CT.  The Warriors got on the board first in the top half of the first using two two-out singles to take a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the frame.  Hamden was able to get one back when Kyle Brennan plated Kwadir McIntyre on an infield fielder's choice.  That score held up until the fifth inning thanks in large part to some magnificent pitching from starter Avery Shugrue who struck out six and walked none in his four innings of work.  The Warriors were able to get two more thanks to a Hurricane error, two stolen bases and a timely single.  They carried a 3-1 lead into the bottom half of the inning where Hamden was able to get one back cutting the deficit to 3-2 using some station to station hitting again plating McIntyre who scored both of the Canes' runs.  The Warriors used a pair of singles in the sixth to add on an insurance run and shut down the Hamden offense there on out to win the title 4-2.

Throughout the tournament the steady on base presence of McIntyre stood out.  McIntyre finished with 3 hits, 5 walks and scored 7 runs.  Jeremy Routh led the way at the plate to the tune of a .455 (5-11) average including 3 RBI's, a double and a triple to his credit.  Tyler Rowe continued his hot streak adding four hits of his own.  While Avery Shugrue, Andrew Rice, Kyle Brennan and Andrew Kirschenbaum also all contributed three hits on the weekend.  On the mound Doug Shane, Routh and Rowe collected the three Canes' wins while Shugrue and Tamir March also pitched well for Hamden.

Hamden moves to 18-4-1 on the season (15-3-1 GNHBL) and returns to league action Thursday night at the Indian River Complex in Clinton when they take on the Clinton Hounds (10-6).  First pitch is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Hurricanes 6, Fairfield Rage 4

A come from behind three run seventh inning proved to be enough to allow the Hamden Hurricanes 13U to survive a trap game before their first tournament of the season.  The Canes improve to 15-3-1 on the year while the Fairfield Rage drop to 4-7.  The Rage used single runs in the first three innings to carry a 3-0 advantage into the fourth.  That was when Tyler Rowe and Andrew Kirschenbaum combined to knock in two Hurricanes and narrow the lead to 3-2 heading to the fifth.  In the fifth, the Canes used a two out rally to plate another when Kwadir McIntyre and Jeremy Routh singled in back to back plate appearances.  In the bottom half of the inning Hamden allowed the Rage to get one back on a throwing error and a single that followed.  Despite getting two runners on in the sixth, Hamden moved to the seventh still trailing 4-3.  With one out in the top of the seventh, Ryan McCarthy laced a single up the middle to put the tying run on base.  McIntyre and Routh again followed with back to back singles loading the bases for Avery Shugrue.  After battling and fouling off a few pitches Shugrue connected on a high fly ball to left field allowing McCarthy to tag and score from third and the other runners to advance.  Clutch as always, Kyle Brennan came through with a two out, two RBI single giving Hamden a 6-4 lead that would stand up when Tyler Rowe shut down the Rage in order in the bottom half of the seventh.  Rowe's effort, along with the stellar job that reliever Andrew Kirschenbaum and starting pitcher Jeremy Routh did proved to be the difference in this one.  Hamden is back in action Saturday at Munson Field in the Pool Play round of the TCS Father's Day Classic.  Hamden takes on fellow GNHBL foe CT Tides in their first game of the day at 12:30 and is back at it at 5:00 against the CT Outlaws Black.  Come out and support your Hurricanes.

Hurricanes 16, Trumbull 1

The Hamden Hurricanes 13U bounced back in a big way against Trumbull Monday night at the Sportsplex winning 16-1.  Hamden pounded out 18 hits and received shut down pitching performances from Avery Shugrue (5 K's in 2 IP), Doug Shane (hitless third inning) and Tamir March (1 ER allowed in 2 IP).  At the dish, Hamden was led by Jeremy Routh who went 2 for 3 with two walks and five RBI's.  Avery Shugrue and Andrew Rice both added two doubles apiece while Trevor Brandi and Damon Savenelli both added three hits each as well.  Hamden wins this one in five innings due to the mercy rule and moves to 14-3-1 on the season.  With the win, Shugrue moves to 4-0 on the mound this year and boasts a microscopic 0.87 ERA.  Kyle Brennan returned to form going 2 for 2 at the plate while Doug Shane also added a double off the bench.  The Canes return to action Thursday night in Fairfield at Kiwanis Park against the Fairfield Rage.  Game starts at 6 p.m.

Wolcott Storm 14, Hurricanes 3

Entering the fifth inning it appeared the Hamden Hurricanes 13U (13-3-1) were primed to take down the undefeated Wolcott Storm (8-0) until the Storm posted a ten run inning ending Hamden's hopes of a victory.  The Storm used a pair of two run innings to take a 4-0 lead into the third inning when Hamden was able to plate one on an RBI ground out by Kwadir McIntyre.  Tyler Rowe and Kyle Brennan combined on a shut down inning in the to half of the fourth allowing Hamden to come to the plate in the bottom half down only 4-1.  Back to back singles from Tyler Rowe and Andrew Rice brough the tying run to the plate in the form of Andrew Kirschenbaum.  Kirschenbaum seemingly singled to left but Rowe was thrown out on a bang bang play at third.  After Avery Shugrue popped out Damon Savenelli laced a two run single to the left field gap cutting the lead to 4-3.  That was as close as the Canes would get as the Storm would use eight hits and five Hurricanes walks to extend their lead to 14-3 in the top of the fifth.  Hamden was unable to score in the bottom of the fifth and fell victim of the mercy rule for only the second time this year.  The Canes are back at it tomorrow night at the Sportsplex against Trumbull at 7 p.m.

Hurricanes 9, Goose's Gamers 7

The winning ways continued Wednesday night for the Hurricanes 13U (13-2-1) despite a late rally from Goose's Gamers (7-5) as the boys in orange held on to win 9-7.  Hamden was anchored by a strong pitching performance from Tyler Rowe and a three hit night from center fielder Andrew Kirschenbaum.  The Goosers struck first in the top half of the third when a two out blooper fell just beyond the reach of second baseman Trevor Brandi plating two Gamers.  Hamden would respond in grand fashion scoring nine runs in the bottom half of the inning on five hits, four walks and three Gamers errors.  Hamden would only tally two more hits after the third inning but the nine runs plated in rather unconventional style would prove to be enough.  The Goosers wouldn't go away however, scoring a lone unearned run in the fourth on an error, two in the sixth chasing starting pitcher Tyler Rowe in favor of James Michaud and trailing 9-5 in the seventh, plated two more Michaud runners inherited by relief pitcher Kyle Brennan.  Brennan would give up two walks and single on the first three batters he faced but would get two flyouts to end the game and pick up his first save of the year in rather dramatic fashion.  Hamden returns to action Sunday at the Sportsplex at 3 p.m. against the undefeated Wolcott Storm (6-0).

Hurricanes 5, Branford Sting 1

The Hamden Hurricanes 13U improved to 12-2-1 on the season with a 5-1 win over the Branford Sting Monday night at the Sportsplex.  Doug Shane (1-0) worked six crafty innings in his first appearance of the year to earn the victory while James Michaud came on to work a scoreless bottom half of the seventh. The Canes, while stellar defensively, struggled at the plate and were able to win the game on only three hits.  Those came on timely singles from outfielder James Michaud, shortstop Andrew Rice and starting pitcher Doug Shane.  Michaud would reach base safely in all four plate appearances (1B, 2 BB, HBP).  The Canes showed patience at the plate, as well, walking eight times on the night.  They return to action Wednesday, June 6th at Hamden Plains when they take on Goose's Gamers.  The Hurricanes opened the season with a 4-3 victory over the Gamers and haven't met since.

Hurricanes 5, Hamden Yard Dogs 4 (Exhibition)

The Hamden Hurricanes 13U used a 7th inning Tamir March sacrifice bunt and a Hamden Yard Dogs' throwing error to push across the winning run Sunday afternoon at Legion Field.  The Yard Dogs, a 14U travel team, went back and forth with the Canes all day but clutch hitting and stalwart pitching allowed the Canes to win this exhibition matchup 5-4.  Hamden got valiant pitching efforts from Kyle Brennan, Tamir March, Andrew Kirschenbaum and winning pitcher Doug Shane and with only four hits on the day they were able to eek out the victory.  Kyle Brennan, James Michaud, Andrew Rice and Tyler Rowe were credited with Hamden's only hits.  The Hamden Hurricanes 13U return back to league action tomorrow night at the Sportsplex at 7 p.m. when they take on familiar foe Branford Sting.  The Canes are 2-1-1 against the Sting this year and are coming off a 10-3 victory over them on Thursday night.
