The Hamden Hurricanes 13U have gone 1-0-1 in their first two pool play games in the 2012 Nutmeg State Games. The Canes take on the Stamford Warhawks on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. If the Canes win they will advance to the gold medal game taking on the first place team from Pool B.
In game one Tuesday night the Canes took on a familiar foe in the form of the Fairfield Rage. The Canes had split with the Rage during the regular season and were looking for redemption after a recent loss. After falling behind 1-0 in the first the Canes got one back in the top half of the third when Ryan McCarthy scored all the way from first on a two out double by Kwadir McIntyre. The Canes tacked on two more in the top of the fourth on an Andrew Kirschenbaum single and an Andrew Rice sac fly. Winning pitcher Tyler Rowe was in cruise control until the bottom of the fifth when the combination of two walks and a single plated a Rage run making it 3-2 Hamden. Hamden would again rebound and plate three runs in the top of the sixth pushing the lead to 6-2. Rice again came through with a one out two run double over the head of the Rage left fielder. A Damon Savenelli squeeze sacrifice bunt plated the sixth run for Hamden. With the two hour time limit looming, the Rage were able to plate two runs off relief pitcher Jeremy Routh who labored walking three in his 2/3 innings of work. Doug Shane came on with runners on the corners, two outs and the possibility of the hitter being the final out due to time constraints. Shane calmly struck out the Rage hitter notching his first save of the season and preserving the 6-4 victory for the Canes.
In game two the Canes took on a team who had already tied in their only other pool play game. The NE Knights came back to tie the Stamford Warhawks 6-6 in the opening game of the tournament Monday night. This day, it was Hamden who got on the board early when Andrew Rice continued his torrid pace with a two run single in the bottom of the first plating McIntyre and James Michaud. But then the bats stalled and everything seemed to be lined right at Knights defenders. The Knights were able to get single runs off starter Doug Shane in the top of the third and fourth and eventually took the lead in the top of the sixth when two two out singles dented Hamden reliever Andrew Kirschenbaum's armor. The Knights carried a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth. Facing the deficit and the possibility of not reaching the medal round Hamden rallied and tallied two runs in the bottom of the sixth all coming with two outs. It began with Jamie Santore reaching on an infield single and advancing to second on the throw. McIntyre followed with a walk which allowed Kyle Brennan to lace a single to center loading the bases for James Michaud. Michaud followed with his team leading sixth hit by pitch to tie the game. Tyler Rowe, clutch as always, lined a single to right field to give Hamden a 4-3 lead. The Knights countered with a single run in the top of the seventh and neither team was able to break the stalemate in the eighth when the time limit again reigned supreme causing the dreaded tie. With the tie, Hamden put themselves in excellent position to take Pool A. With a win Saturday against Stamford Hamden will play for the gold.

Canes Struggling Down the Stretch
The Hamden Hurricanes 13U have done something they hadn't done all season, lose two straight games. After smacking around the CT Tides 14-1 back on July 5 the Canes were upset by the Fairfield Rage 7-3 on Monday night in Fairfield and fell 12-6 to the Wolcott Storm Wednesday night in Hamden. But all is not lost. The Canes are still a staggering 24-7-1 on the season and boast a 19-5-1 mark in the Greater New Haven Baseball League which was good enough for a second place finish behind the undefeated Wolcott Storm. Though the regular season has come to a close, the Canes are slated to play a couple of exhibition games before the Connecticut Nutmeg Games July 23-28. They take on the Clinton Hounds (11-9) tomorrow (7/14) at Hamden Plains and host the CT Outlaws Black of the ESBL Wednesday, July 18 at 5:45 at Legion Field. Below read up on some statistical finds about each Hurricane player.
